Fall is in full effect, and yes winter will be here soon. For some this means fun on the slopes, for others it is the time of the season they dread. Unless you live in Miami, the heating season is fast approaching, if it is not already here. Here are a few tips and recommendations for keeping your heating system working at its most efficient.
Annual inspections: At the beginning of every heating season you should have a professional inspect your system, especially if your furnace is 5 years or older. This will keep it running as efficiently as possible, and ensure they are not any hazardous issues, like a carbon monoxide leak.
Replace those filters: You should replace your furnace filter every 60-90 days. This will help your system run more efficiently and keep the air inside your home cleaner. We recommend using a reusable furnace filter. This means less waste in our landfills, and more money in your pocket.
Keep those vents clean and clear: If you use a forced air heating system, make sure all the vents in your home are free of dust, debris and furniture. Check you cold air return too.
Keep the thermostat low: This is why we buy winter clothes right? As a general rule, for every degree above 68, your heating bill will increase by 15%. If you do not have a programmable thermostat; get one. This will allow you to pre-program your temperature throughout the day and night, and gives you much more control over the temperature in your home.
Replace if necessary: If your system is 20 years or older, you might want to think about replacing your furnace. A new, Energy Star furnace can be 40-50% more efficient then older, non-Energy Star units. This applies to natural gas, electric and heating oil furnaces.
