Reel Design: Countdown to the Oscars

The Fashion Institute of Los Angeles revealed their newest exhibit earlier this month in preparation for Sunday's Academy Awards. The exhibit, "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" offered museum goers glimpses of costumes from a number of nominees including "Alice in Wonderland" (pictured above).

Look how such a ruby-red, color saturated costume lets Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter character pop even in this display. His female costars, Helena Bonham Carter among them, wore grays, muted blacks and pale blues. The movie was certainly a bold statement and a departure from the traditional tale. The costumes speak to that. The costumes underline what we know well: Real design - and reel design - tells a story through color.

We're looking forward to seeing the colors the actors choose to don as they walk the red carpet Sunday. Any guesses? We're thinking pops of color - more Mad Hatter than Alice, for sure.
